My boyfriend’s car broke down while on the way home from a restaurant. While we were waiting for the tow truck to arrive, a police officer stopped. Unfortunately, my boyfriend, being stubborn and a stickler for preserving his rights, only rolled his window down about five inches and refused to roll it down further when the police officer asked him to, which resulted in the officer saying that he smelled marijuana and having us both exit the vehicle. Two other cars arrived, leading to a search, both of us getting patted down, and of course nothing being found in the car because neither of us do or have ever done drugs.
I realize that my boyfriend should not have been such a jerk when he probably just meant to see if we needed help, and believe me, I yelled at him for not rolling his window down all the way to make things easier after they had left. It’s possible that the smell could have been carried on someone’s clothes that my boyfriend gave a ride to, but would that really be possible for him to detect on a rainy night?
I’m just wondering about this, since I’ve never even had a traffic stop, so it was humiliating to have to go through that for nothing.
