More Uncle Chen, Lian How foods recalled

Asian foods supplier Union International Food Co. has again expanded its recall of products because of concerns about possible salmonella contamination. This latest round of recalls includes 51 Uncle Chen and Lian How branded sauces, oils and pastes, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said last week.

Feds: Food-safety efforts have stalled

Efforts to better protect consumers from dangerous foodborne pathogens, including E. coli O157:H7 and salmonella, have virtually stalled, federal officials said. They also noted that the estimated number of infections from targeted pathogens in 2008 showed no significant change compared with the past three years.

FDA warns operators as pistachio recall grows

Federal officials advised foodservice operators not to sell items made with pistachios until they are certain those products do not contain nuts from Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella Inc., which this week widened its recall over concerns of a salmonella contamination.

UPDATED: Spice maker expands recall

The Union International Food Co. has added a number of products to its earlier announced recall of Uncle Chen and Lian How branded spices and seasonings possibly linked to a Salmonella Rissen outbreak in several western states. The recalled products are primarily used by restaurants and retailers, according to the company and public health officials.

FDA advises halt in pistachio consumption

In a move that could reduce sales and complicate operations at some restaurants, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Monday advised the public to temporarily halt its consumption of pistachios until investigators better understand the extent of Salmonella contamination detected in lots from a major supplier and where the suspect nuts may have been distributed.
