The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has advised consumers to stop eating raw alfalfa sprouts and blends containing them until further notice because of possible salmonella Saintpaul contamination.

Asian foods supplier Union International Food Co. has again expanded its recall of products because of concerns about possible salmonella contamination. This latest round of recalls includes 51 Uncle Chen and Lian How branded sauces, oils and pastes, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said last week.

Efforts to better protect consumers from dangerous foodborne pathogens, including E. coli O157:H7 and salmonella, have virtually stalled, federal officials said. In a move that could reduce sales and complicate operations at some restaurants, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Monday advised the public to temporarily halt its consumption of pistachios until investigators better understand the extent of Salmonella contamination detected in lots from a major supplier and where the suspect nuts may have been distributed.
