Open Question: My boyfriend doesn’t know that my family is semi-wealthy?

Monday, December 12th, 2011

I’m 18 and a senior in high school, my boyfriend is 21. We met working at a restaurant together and started dating 4 months later.

Basically he’s talked about how his family was poor growing up and I know he’s had difficulties making bills. He is actually taking a year off of college to work full time because he doesn’t want to go in debt.

I think he thinks I’m in a similar situation and views me better because he thinks I’m working hard to save up this money because I know I’ll need for college.

Really, my family is upper-middle class and my parents will be paying for my college (all the necessities, like tution, room and board, ext) and I don’t need the money at all. I just want spending money and to have some in savings just in case.

I’ve never lied to him or tried to deceive him. Do you think it will make things weird if I tell him now? I already feel bad having him pay for movies, dinners, ext when I know he’s hurting for cash and I have plenty. Am I making too big of a deal about this?

Open Question: Should I quit my job?

Friday, December 9th, 2011

I am 18 and I work at a restaurant as a hostess. My manager and I do not get along, in fact not one of my coworkers likes him. He is constantly changing the rules and the way that we have to do things. He tells me something and I know it’s not a good idea but I have to listen to him anyway because he never lets me be right, and then after I do them a guest gets mad at me when it’s not my fault. I am just so tired of him making me feel so low. At one point he told me that I was not using any common sense and that I have no discernment because I spoke up about something that I knew was wrong.

Should I suck it up here because I need the money and no where else is hiring, or should I quit because I know I am not being treated the way I should be and because I could survive without the extra money for a few months?

It’s a hard decision and I need some advice.

Open Question: How can I treat what I think is a fractured big toe?

Monday, November 7th, 2011

I stubbed my big toe earlier today and it’s still quite red in the front. I can move it down but not up and if I try to put weight on it or walk I get this intense pain straight down the middle of the front of my toe. There is no mark besides the very red on the very front (no bruising yet) so I presume that I fractured the front of it.

I have to work tomorrow and I need the money so I can’t take time off of work to go see a doctor or for them to tell me to stay off of it. I am going to have it looked at by a doctor tomorrow perhaps if it is still bad.

Should I ice it or heat it and how can I protect it while I am at work (I cook in a restaurant so I am just wearing flat work shoes)? Is it okay to take a pain killer or would that not benefit it?

I understand it’s not good and I should see a doctor (I fractured my knee cap 4 years ago and still worked and the doctor was very angry about it, but again, I can’t afford the time off) so I am going to try and take care of it during this shift and keep my workload pretty light but otherwise, how do I help it so I do the least amount of damage if it is indeed fractured? (hopefully it’s not and I just hurt it really bad)

Open Question: How do I explain this situation in my resume?

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

In 2007-8, I worked at Dairy Queen/Orange Julius. I began working there again a few weeks ago (at a different store), because I figured it was a job which would be easy to get as I’m in need of money right now. However I’ve been searching for other jobs and I’ve found a waitressing job that I’m interested in. How would I write in my resume:

1. I worked at DQ/OJ November 07-March 08, and again in July 10?
2. That I’m attending a university in the fall? I just graduated from high school so I put the end date as June 10, but I’m not certain about the dates I should put for university.
3. That despite having only fast food experience, I’ll make a good waitress?

Lastly, the restaurant I’m interested in is a Japanese restaurant. I understand Japanese better than I speak it but I learn fast (most of my friends speak Japanese well/fluently so I’m learning tons). I’m also self taught but only to the extent of having a simple conversation. How do I mention this in my resume?

Thanks in advance!

Open Question: Unpaid work hours and threaten?

Monday, July 25th, 2011

My ex boss placed down some tickets which a month later lost but because he claims to be always right on all he does. To cover his back and walk free out of this, he accused me of stilling them and fired my wife and me. Now, after over a month of being fired I still haven’t got two checks worth about $900 & $120 on fees from a bounced check (I have proved of my hours). He’s told me that I will not see the checks until I pay those tickets he lost and even threaten me trying to humiliate me. I’d spoken to the owner of the restaurant on a very professional way, but he’s let all this go through my ex boss and claimed to be the owner but not really involve in the restaurant.

My ex boss assures to have video me taking them, which I know he doesn’t at all, cuz I didn’t do it.

I’m a married 24 year old guy who goes to college and have a 3 year old son. This man took our only income and if it wasn’t for my college savings I wouldn’t know how to pay my rent, utilities, food, etc. we are unemployed and I’m looking bad on paying my next semester’s tuition.

I have proved that I’m a man of my word and a hard worker. I want to do what’s right with this situation but I don’t know what to do.

PLEASE HELP ME!! I REALY NEED MY MONEY AND JUSTES
(I live in Florida, Palm Beach County, City of West Palm Beach)

Open Question: Why do older people get paid more than younger people?

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

Anyone else think the concept of paying people more when they’re older (e.g. a 19 year old would be paid more than a 14 year old doing the same job at a fast food restaurant) is immoral? Saying a 19 year old needs more money than a 14 year old or that they do a better job is like saying men need more money than women or that men do a better job than women. Few people would agree with that but many seem fine with less pay younger people. Why is this the case?
I just want to add that I’m 18. I’m not 14.

Open Question: can my boss take money off from my paycheck b/c money was short?

Friday, May 6th, 2011

This is Saskatchewan.
I am working in franchise restaurant from Oct, 2009 to now.
I never signed any of employment contract and never heard from my boss that they are taking money off from the paycheck when money was short on my shift until I asked about my payment today.
I worked with one co-worker (who was the supervisor that time), and we shared our till because we only have one till. The money was short for three days when I worked with him, and one was the refund that I made (I didn’t even know we are not making any refund cause no one told me about one week after from that day I made refund). My boss took about $20 from my and my co-worker’s paycheck because he has no evidence who stolen the money.
Can my boos take money off from my paycheck because money was short when I worked with my co-worker, and he have no evidence that I or my co-worker stold the money?

I can just forget about $20. But, problem is, my boss is going to take money off from my paycheck every time when the money short from now on. This short money problem will happen again for sure because I have to work with the same guy until he quit or I quit(but I can’t cuz I need money for school), and I do not want to pay money for the thing that I never done.

Open Question: Do I quit a job I know I am going to hate?

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

Ok so here’s the deal, I got a job at a fast food restaurant, I know that I will not like working there. In fact I will hate it. I have a another job and I only will have these jobs for about 2 months cause I will be going back to school in aug. My dad and step mom and boyfriends tell me to keep it cause I need the money and I do, but is it worth it for my health to suffer, cause right now I am so stress and anxious about working there it is effecting my health. So ya there is my dilemma.
