Open Question: Ahh! I just got a new job at a restaurant.. and i cant hear on the phone?

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

I just got a job as a hostess at a restaurant! I am enjoying it very much because it is my first job and the people seem real nice. The only problem, however is that I have “answering the phone” duty. I usually do not have problems with speaking on the phone but with this phone a guest will call in and you cannot hear a word they say. I feel stupid because I am new asking the guest to repeat constantly what they have said. My trainer is unhappy with my phone etiquette, as I became frustrated not being able to hear. I wasn’t rude to the guest of course but it was just so overwhelming. And i know this sounds lame haha but its something I have to no how to do. Any advice on what I can do? I just can’t seem to hear anything on the line other than manager and etc. hopefully i’ll get used to it. :/
i meant to say i cant hear anything the guest will say except “can i speak to the manager”. and apparently if you go to the manager not being able to tell who is calling and on the phone for them the manager will get angry.

Open Question: Can you give me a few tips on how not to fail tomorrow as a hostess?

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

So i got a job in Senoritas a mexican restaurant, bar, grill. etc. And i am one of the new hostess… I’ve only worked 2 days and hasn’t completed my training yet, which is suppose to be 3 days. But the girl that gave me instructions won’t be working with me tomorrow and i’ll be on my own. So a lot of people do come on weekends i’ve heard and here’s a list of a few things i know. How to greet peole etc. and i learned the 55 tables on the 1st floor. but i do get confuse with the table for 6 people… cause you have to separate them or something like that. And i know how to use the computer to check off the sits taken or not. And also i know how to make a reservation but i still hasn’t been told if i asign the table or someone will assign it for me… Is there anything else that i should know? This is my first job and i don’t wanna loose it. My boss told me that i will be on my own starting tomorrow so i’ve got to show him my best! And i will! but i’m afraid i dont have the skills… I’m not that fast either. So please help me if you can! It’ll mean so much thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Open Question: Why cant I stop thinking about her?

Sunday, January 1st, 2012

Alright so im 20 years old, and every thursdays me and my family go to this restaurant to see a car show. There is a hostess their that I always thought was so beautiful. She seems so humble and joyful all the time and always took good care of us. Im pretty sure that she is single too. Anways, I was never able to talk to her because of how busy she looked. Last thursday was the last car show so finally I got the guts to give her a Little note stating that I think she is very pretty and maybe we can be friends and hang sometime with my number at the bottom. She smiled and told me thank you. Every thing seemed so great. for the next 3 days, I looked at my phone like every 10 minutes to see if she called or texted me… and she never did. SInce then, ive felt so sad. I always think of her cute smiles and end up sighing. This is so strange to me because I dont even really know the girl and im acting like I just broke up with her after a 10 year relationship. I just moved here to San Diego from Hawaii and seen a lot f good looking girls, but she is the first girl that caught my eye since I got here… My friends just keep telling me to get other girls..but its like I dont want them. sigh idk I just wanted to share it with some people and ask what they think about this.

Open Question: If you’re in the middle of a job interview and the potential boss says…?

Sunday, January 1st, 2012

I had a job interview at a restaurant for a hostess position, I can work any hours, and the two managers were extremely relaxed and were making fun of each other and everything. Let’s just say it wasn’t your typical interview. Anyway, if in the middle of the interview, the main manager says, “Well, I’ll definitely call you.” what does that mean? Like does it mean that they’ll definitely hire me or that they’ll call me whether I get the job or not?? Also, the interview was like 25 minutes long, and was more in conversation form, than nothing but questions.

Open Question: What does this usually mean?

Open Question: How should I present myself for this job interview?

Friday, December 30th, 2011

I’ve worked in fast food and also a casual 40’s style diner as a hostess/server before. I have a job interview coming up this Wednesday for a restaurant in the city part of town. The place I have an interview for, in my words, is a quite ‘fancy’ restaurant.

I’m a persistent worker and I’m skilled with ‘breaking out the charisma’ in situations like interviews. However, there is one problem. I don’t know how I should present myself.

I’m considered ‘middle class’ yet at the moment, being jobless and all, I have no money to go buy nice clothes. Normally to job interviews I wear jeans or skinny black pants and a nice shirt. I’m worried, for a place like this, it will make me come off as unprofessional.

I know this sounds rather silly and naive but how should I present myself? Again, I don’t have the money to buy nice clothes at the moment so what should I wear? Should I wear my hair up or down?

Also, how much make up is ‘too much’? In society’s terms nowadays, women who don’t wear make up come off as ’sloppy’. Women who wear too much come off as ‘caked on’. What amount is acceptable? I normally have a ’40’s based’ (bright red lipstick, light/almost skin coloured eyeshadow, eyeliner, and mascara) make up style going on, which is why it was acceptable at my old job since it was a 40’s based diner. Should I tone it down? Ditch my red lipstick, eyeshadow or eyeliner? I’m 18 but, even with makeup, practically look like I’m 14 but makeup helps some.

Any feedback before Wednesday would be much appreciated. I know how to present myself in words. I even know a little ‘no gos’ which influenced me to take out my gauges and I’m going to take out my facial piercings for the interview. What I’m unsure of is the clothing, makeup, and hair.

Thank you in advance.
The predicament is I don’t own formal or nice clothes and I only have $1.48 to my name.
