I’ve worked in fast food and also a casual 40’s style diner as a hostess/server before. I have a job interview coming up this Wednesday for a restaurant in the city part of town. The place I have an interview for, in my words, is a quite ‘fancy’ restaurant.
I’m a persistent worker and I’m skilled with ‘breaking out the charisma’ in situations like interviews. However, there is one problem. I don’t know how I should present myself.
I’m considered ‘middle class’ yet at the moment, being jobless and all, I have no money to go buy nice clothes. Normally to job interviews I wear jeans or skinny black pants and a nice shirt. I’m worried, for a place like this, it will make me come off as unprofessional.
I know this sounds rather silly and naive but how should I present myself? Again, I don’t have the money to buy nice clothes at the moment so what should I wear? Should I wear my hair up or down?
Also, how much make up is ‘too much’? In society’s terms nowadays, women who don’t wear make up come off as ’sloppy’. Women who wear too much come off as ‘caked on’. What amount is acceptable? I normally have a ’40’s based’ (bright red lipstick, light/almost skin coloured eyeshadow, eyeliner, and mascara) make up style going on, which is why it was acceptable at my old job since it was a 40’s based diner. Should I tone it down? Ditch my red lipstick, eyeshadow or eyeliner? I’m 18 but, even with makeup, practically look like I’m 14 but makeup helps some.
Any feedback before Wednesday would be much appreciated. I know how to present myself in words. I even know a little ‘no gos’ which influenced me to take out my gauges and I’m going to take out my facial piercings for the interview. What I’m unsure of is the clothing, makeup, and hair.
Thank you in advance.
The predicament is I don’t own formal or nice clothes and I only have $1.48 to my name.
