Open Question: I forgot the name of a book and its author. Please can someone help me out?

Monday, May 16th, 2011

I read it ages ago, when I was about 10 or 11, and don’t remember much about it. It’s a supernatural novel for teenagers. Little details come back, like I think the main character’s first girlfriend was called Kim. The main character is a teenage boy, I think. He gets a new girlfriend when he goes on holiday somewhere, and becomes immune to pain or injury, and I think it turns out that his girlfriend is the same. This is not a good thing, though, because he becomes a bit of a zombie. I think there’s a scene where he tries to cut off his nipple with scissors to test if he can be hurt. The book ends in a cold place, if I remember correctly, with eskimos involved. Other small details I remember are:
1) Near the start he has dinner with Kim(?) and he eats steak and she eats fish. He takes her to a fancy restaurant and comments that her previous boyfriend took her to cheap fast-food joints.
2) I think he experiences the bends at some point, when he is diving on holiday.
Take what I have said with a pinch of salt, because I read it a long time ago. If anyone can tell me the title and author I would be very grateful - I’ve been looking for this book for years.

Open Question: When is it appropriate to write checks?

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

I’m young and dumb and I just got my first checkbook from my parents. When can I use it? I know it’s not very popular anymore but still. At restaurants? shopping? fast-food joints? lol.

Open Question: What do they mean by “Never Frozen Patties”?

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

Okay, alot of commercials lately advertising for restaurants and fast-food joints are now using the phrase “never-frozen meat”. Does that mean when the patties are delivered to the restaurant, it did not come in frozen? If not….what do they mean?

Open Question: Is there some way to avoid cooking (cleaning) for the next month?

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Here is the situation: My boyfriend and I are going to be spending a lot of time working for the next month, maybe 2 months. We’re talking like like 80-90 hours a week. But the main thing is that this is also going to involve lots of weird hours, pulling all nighters, working through standard meal times, that kind of thing. This started this week and I’m a little confused how to deal with the seemingly basic problem of feeding myself.

Some info: We live in a European city where eating out regularly is not really an option. It’s very expensive. Also, we will (with the long work hours) be working well after things (restaurants, grocery stores) have already closed. So we can go to the grocery store maybe 1-2 times a week. We’d like to eat at least kind of healthy. I don’t want to feel ashamed if my mother asks me what I had for dinner. Our fridge and freezer (especially freezer) are small. The reason I mention where we live is that when I lived in America this was easy. There are late night restaurants/fast food joints, grocery stores are open late, convenience items are a lot easier to come by (decent frozen meals available even at regular grocery stores), and I had a comparatively massive fridge and freezer. But now I don’t have those options, so I don’t know what to do.

I guess what I am looking for here is a sort of novel solution about the food problem. I mean, we do have to eat. But it literally feels like there is no time, not just for preparation, but for actual purchase of food as well.

What do you do to avoid cooking? Any specific meals that you turn to? Or do you have a good system of avoiding cooking? I thought about freezing meals but our freezer is small and we basically have 1 day off. I don’t want to spend it slaving together in the kitchen to generate food for the rest of the week. I would love ideas on at least somewhat healthy meals that can be made in less than 20 mins without a ton of chopping or shopping. 1 pot-bowl-plate meals also appreciated, since it’s fewer things to wash. We’re not picky eaters.

And if you have some tips on keeping the apartment reasonably tidy you can throw those in as well.

Oh, and I would really appreciate strategies or meals that you’ve actually tried, not just a recipe off the internet!

Open Question: What is the best diet for safe and rapid weight loss?

Sunday, April 4th, 2010

Considering the person is moderately obese (overweight), has no specific medical conditions, lives a fairly active lifestyle, and does not eat at fast food joints or eat a large amt. of junk food? I ask because all in our family want to diet, BMI’s are 33, 35.9, and 30.
We thought of trying the fill 1/2 of your plate with steamed veggies, and 1/8 with meat, 1/8 with fruit, 1/8 with starches, and use the remaining portion that would equal the 1/8 for your liquid, and DON”T wash down your food plan. We all like veggies and baked foods, and don’t really overeat any more like we did in the past. We have not had pot. chips/fries/etc. for 2 months, do drink crystal lite drinks, don’t drink soda and our only 2 fast food restaurants are subway and Arbys…so: can anyone tell us what has worked for them? Oh, yes: the 19yr. old spends his day at college, walking campus, playing pool and racketball, and is a couch pot. at home about 5 hrs. per day, the dad is not very active, and mom works 2 jobs: both require physical strength and total 15 hrs. per day. (Please: no cracks about dad not being active, he has a medical reason)
