Open Question: Is www.yelp.com a good website for researching for ratings based on martial arts schools?

Sunday, July 4th, 2010

I always use www.yelp.com to look for ratings for restaurants, places I’ve visit, bookstores, shopping malls, gift shops..etc.

I’ve been trying to use Yelp to look up martial arts schools out of curiousity, and a good number of MA schools have good ratings, but a good amount of time, some comments doesn’t focus much on the quality of things being taught. At the same time, there are schools with really bad rating, thus a McDojo.

Is Yelp.com a good site for looking up MA schools?

Open Question: 21 and lost on deciding what to do with life. Still have musical dreams.?

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

I know this is a personal decision, but I’ve sat and meditated hard on this question many times over. I’m 21 (almost 22) and I’m an English major sophomore in college at a decent state school. My jobs have been mainly in restaurants and also as a Childcare instructor.

I just started playing guitar a year ago, and I really like it but I feel that if I want to make a career out of I’d need to drop everything and focus solely on becoming great at it.

Is it a foolish idea? Time to grow up? I don’t seem to be as interested in school as many other people, and I don’t stand out in any way. I’m at the bottom rung of college students, no Ivy league, not involved in nor do I have an interest in become a leader of student body organizations.

In my free time I love playing guitar, and I have to force myself to study.

Is being a guitar player an adolescent naive dream? Do most people go through this, and end up growing up and deciding to become part of the real world?

They say that most people don’t find out what they truly enjoy doing until they get out into the real world and see what jobs are out there, but I look around and think about all the possibilities and none of them seem like they are for me.
