Open Question: How to deal with a crappy job?

Friday, February 4th, 2011

This is the situation. I am 19 and a working student. My job is at a local Quizno’s. The job itself isn’t too bad and the boss is pretty nice. However, the pay is very inconsistent. My boss is sort of a goof and incredibly disorganized. To be frank, she has owned that particular restaurant for 7 years and I am very surprised she hasn’t gone bankrupt. We’re always running out of stuff because she doesn’t keep inventory very well and her finances regarding the restaurant is way too disorganized. She’ll misplace weekly reports of the income or there will be money missing from the register or something.

Because of that her employees usually get paid a week or more late and even if we do she might tell us to hold off on depositing our check because she needs to pay for food first. I don’t mind getting paid late but a check she gave me bounced because she didn’t tell me not to deposit it yet this one time and I suffered overdraft fees as a result. I still have the check with me and I don’t even know when to deposit it yet because it seems to me like she doesn’t have her stuff together yet.

Should I just quit or just suffer through it until the situation gets better? I prefer the latter because finding another job in this economy is incredibly hard. Any advice though?

Open Question: Help my Restaurant make money!?

Saturday, December 25th, 2010

Well in this bad economy im trying to bring some business into my restaurant. A local restaurant started a raffel were if you buy a meal you get a ticket stub and you come in next week for a chance to win money. The way they did this was the owner of business puts in 50 bucks and if your number is drawn and your not there the money is then saved till next week and the pot just keeps getting bigger which is making more people come in to eat. So i am trying to figure a way to attract customers so we can compete with them but not do the same game they are doing. I Have done a deal for on mondays people can order a meal and get second one half off and all kids eat free. Any ideas would be great thanks.

Open Question: I couldn’t get hired because I am a citizen. Is it a discrimination?

Sunday, December 12th, 2010

I applied for a wait staff position in a restaurant.
I was called for the job interview, and the employer kind of liked me.
He told me to come to work tomorrow and buy a white dress-shirt and black trousers and a bow-tie.
But after he found out my immigration status, which is a citizen, he said he can’t hire me’cuz he pays below the state minimum wage and doesn’t pay for overtime, and
a citizen might file a complaint to authorities, so he always hires unlawful status people.
I convinced him that nowdays economy is struggling, and I understand that, so you don’t have to
pay me overtime and keep the state minimum wage. As long as I can work, I am happy.
However, he insisted illegal immigrants they never report but citizens and green card holders.
Basically, he turned me down because I am a citizen.
I feel something is wrong. I don’t get hired because I am a citizen?? Is it a discrimination?

Open Question: I don’t know what I want to be?

Monday, November 8th, 2010

I’m 20 years old and still not in college because I have no idea what I want to do career wise. Does it always take so long to figure out what you’re truly passionate about? I feel like I need to figure it out soon. I don’t want to be 30 years old and still working in the restaurant industry because I can’t decide on a career.
I like things like art, photography, soccer, and writing.
I can’t be an artist and I can’t write for a living. Art isn’t a steady income and writing is pretty hard with the current economy.
I like photography but it isn’t something I’d pursue a career in.
As for soccer, lets face it. It was a nice thing to do in school but I don’t see myself making it a career.
I’m really at a dead end. I thought about becoming a teacher but they don’t make a lot of money either. Also, a lot of young teachers are getting laid off at the moment and it’s gonna take a while for this economy to bounce back.
I also thought about being a nurse but I later found that I’m too squeamish.
How do you figure out what to do career wise? Any advice? thanks! :)

Open Question: Know a good restaurant slogan?

Monday, November 1st, 2010

For school, I need to build an imaginary business. I made a restaurant called Deals on Meals.
A pun of the “Meals on Wheels” service. But I need a cool slogan for my ad. Here’s the rundown of my restaurant: It’s not just one restaurant, it’s A CHAIN of restaurants. In it, we serve low price foods in large quantities (Like in some of those old-fashioned diners) and we offer healthier selections for the economy’s “gain” of debt and weight.

So, any ideas?

Open Question: Do we overemphasize education in our country? Should the government be raising and teaching our children for?

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

us?

I think education is overemphasized in this country and it certainly does not ensure a good paying job. As we speak there are individuals all across the country with Associates degrees working at fast food restaurants and not necessarily as managers either. I bet if you walk into your local McDonalds tomorrow and ask, is there any one working here with a college education who is not a manager, you would be surprised as to the percentage that are. The sheer amount of homework that my second grader brings home with her astounds me. She is bringing home biology home work in second grade. To me this is ridiculous! Don’t get me wrong, I feel that all Americans should be taught to read fluently and write and basic math skills, but I feel we are way overemphasizing education in this county! Further more, education does absolutely no good if there are no jobs to be had! Industry is the back bone of any civilization! Ireland’s economy is booming right now, they have more job than they can fill because they have industry in their country!

Open Question: What happens when you walk away from lease?

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

I run a small restaurant fast food place in a shopping mall. The rent there is $14,000 a month. Due to the economy, we can no longer afford the monthly rent and we have 5 years left with our lease. Anyways, to keep the story short, we closed our business. Now the mall sued us for the remaining month ($650,000). Our spot in the mall was rented out a month later. Does this mean we must report bankruptcy?

Open Question: Do my dinner guests expect me to pay the bill? Is it okay to ask them to pay their own?

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

My 21st Birthday is coming up, I have invited all family members and my boyfriends family, who I am very close to. The total is expected at 25 people and I have chosen a reasonably priced restaurant. I am in college, self-supporting, and not financially well off so I am wondering, when I invite everyone is it okay to tell them that everyone will be paying their own meal? Is my dad at all expected to pay for it all? I was hoping to have my whole family together for a fun time and a nice meal without pressure on one person paying for it all because we are all struggling a little in this economy. Is this okay? Thanks in advance for your help!
