Open Question: How much land would it cost to feed about 100 people lunch every day?

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

Perhaps my dreams are unrealistic, but I want to buy a piece of land in Arizona and build a house, an outpatient clinic and a Gurdwara (Sikh temple) on the land. Gurdwaras traditionally serve a vegetarian meal to everyone after services. I would like to grow most of the vegetables myself (well actually anyone will be free to help grow the vegetables, but most of them will not be store bought). Of course I’ll buy things like beans, rice and wheat from wholesale stores since they require considerable space, etc. I also plan to raise some miniature zebu dairy cows to provide most of our own milk, butter, and yogurt. Mini-Zebu produce about a gallon each and you can fit about 10 on 5 acres.

I know some restaurants own farms so how do they do it?

So… my question is…

How much land would it cost to feed about 100 people lunch every day?
It is true that cattle are expensive, but at least these are miniature Zebu cows which can eat stuff that other cattle would not eat and because they are miniature they produce a good supply of milk to cost ratio. 10 cows per acre at a gallon each. Not to mention it is not like I can’t buy some of the food from the store. It’s not like we are eating a meal made up entirely of dairy either, we got veggies too!
