Open Question: Laws on signal dogs (for the deaf)?
I lost hearing (complete) in one ear about 2 years ago. I was wanting to train a dog to help me. Everything I’ve found says “deaf or hearing impaired” and I’ve seen one person mention something about being deaf in one ear in reply to a service dog question. But I was wondering if anyone knows if I do have full rights to a signal dog (to work, town, restaurants…) without being completely deaf.
Second, I was wanting to train my show un-spayed female (YA edited out the common term as profanity) to do it. I know many places that train themselves always spay/neuter, but on legal terms, can an un-spayed female dog be a service dog? I really want to show this dog when she comes of age (she can’t be spayed to do conformation shows), but I’m not going to have 2 dogs (plus then I would be closer to the service dog than my show dog I’ve spent years researching bloodlines and breeders for). I may leave her at home while she is in heat, but for the other 10-11 months of the year she’d work just as well.
I’ve read up on the laws from ada.gov, but some things just aren’t mentioned.
My hearing loss is due to nerve damage, I can’t get hearing aids. And I’ve made it 2 years without a dog and will for at least another 1 year for training, I can get by a few weeks if it would be better for her. That doesn’t mean the dog would not be a significant aid for me.
